January 18, 2010

We also have a few new shots of the thing, and now we’re we won’t be stingy with ‘em. Take a look below to get your Ya-Ya’s out.

BPhone looks like a netbook, acts like a netbook, has ‘phone’ in its name (video)

December 31, 2009

If you were looking for a large and impractical “cellphone,” we just might have some news for you. Hot on the heels of a certain Dell netbook mod, we submit for your approval a 5-inch convertible device that features a QWERTY chocolate keyboard, trackball, and quite possibly Windows XP. We’ve got no relevant data for you, such as manufacturer, price, and release date are all mysteries at this point, but you can see it in action if you like — just check out the videos after the break. As for us, we think we’ll just wait for the xpPhone.

ITG xpPhone seen powering up on video

December 15, 2009

ITG has managed to keep its xpPhone in the news ever since firing up its pre-order page back in September. Just a day after seeing the Windows XP-based MID / phone / whatchamacallit in the wild, we’re now looking at the first known video of it booting up. Granted, the device shown after the break is just an “engineering sample,” but hey, progress is progress. Go ‘head, take a peek — ain’t no shame in the game.

HT560 5.6-inch UMPC spotted in Shenzhen running Windows XP

December 3, 2009

Sure, an Android MID featuring some sort of contrived “net gen” functionality might promise inspirational moments, but will it get the job done? A company called Shenzhen Seed Industrial, located in the Chegongmiao Futian Distict (we hear it’s lovely in the spring) is offering retailers and e-tailers a Windows XP-powered workhorse in the form of the HT560 5.6-inch UMPC/MID. Built on the VIA C7 (1GHz) processor, this guy sports 1GB RAM, 16GB SDD, two USB 2.0 ports, and both front and rear-facing 1.3 megapixel webcams. For connectivity, you get the usual assortment of WiFi and Bluetooth, with a GPS thrown in for good measure. If you’re looking to pick up a handful of these things, hit up the Tradekey link where it’s available in lots of ten. Otherwise, Wirelession appears to have rebranded this the W1030 and have priced it at $421. Want a closer look? You can get one after the break.

ViewSonic VCP08 seen clearly, largely in the wild

December 2, 2009

Last we saw of ViewSonic’s VCP08 Windows XP phone was just a handful of renders. New images have surfaced of the real deal, physical model, and two things become immediately clear. First off, the company managed to stay true to the initial pictures. Secondly, this thing is huge. So huge it towers over the N97 Mini, which itself isn’t really much smaller than the N97. Make no mistake, though, that in no way stops us from wanting to play with it. In the meantime, hit up the source link for a cavalcade of images.

xpPhone teased with specs and pictures, makes Windows XP young again

October 30, 2009

Don’t panic, we haven’t gone back in time. What we’re looking at here is the world’s first but still-yet-to-be-released phone that runs on Windows XP, and its Chinese maker has just released some juicy specs and interface images to tease us all. The ITG xpPhone will be blessed with the chutzpah-filled AMD “Super Mobile” CPU, coupled with either 512MB or 1GB RAM. Storage options range from 8GB SSD to 120GB HDD (probably 1.8-inch) and everything in between. While the sheet confirms both GSM and CDMA support, ITG’s pre-order page — which looks more like a newsletter sign-up page at the moment — is still vague on the phone’s availability and price. For now we’ll just continue to gaze at the interface pictures until something happens.

XP Mode is ready, will be a free download on October 22

October 2, 2009

Microsoft Download Center, October 22 — add that to your already-busy Windows 7 release party itinerary. That’ll be the quickest and most painless way to enrich your hot new OS with the now finalized code for XP Mode, a virtualized Windows XP environment for those who just can’t let go of their legacy software. The solitary hitch is that you’ll need to have purchased a copy of Windows 7 Professional or higher to get in on the fun, but you already knew that, right? Oh, and you might also want to check that your hardware manufacturer hasn’t disabled virtualization as part of some overzealous security / party-pooping measure.

HP’s Ion-infused Mini 311 netbook now on sale, starts at $400

September 24, 2009

We had originally assumed that Lenovo’s IdeaPad S12 would be the first netbook to ship with NVIDIA’s Ion platform, but since that rig was delayed until Windows 7 could make its retail debut, HP decided to swoop in and claim the honors. You heard right — the recently introduced Mini 311 has just become the first netbook in the universe with NVIDIA’s Ion to actually ship to end users, and it’s up for order right now starting at $399.99. ‘Course, you’ll be asked to pay extra for a white chassis ($20), Atom N280 ($25), Bluetooth ($25), 802.11n ($25) and integrated WWAN ($125), but at least that 1,366 x 768 resolution display comes standard.

[Thanks, Steve]

ITG’s Windows XP-loving xpPhone now accepting pre-orders worldwide

ITG's Windows XP-loving xpPhone now accepting pre-orders worldwide

It’s been awhile since we last saw the xpPhone, a quick, quiet demonstration at Computex that left us doubting whether the thing would ever see the light of day outside a packed showroom floor. It seems our doubts are about to be put to rest as ITG, creator of the thing, has thrown up a pre-order page on the phone’s website. There’s no mention of a price, and indeed you won’t be asked to plunk down any cash right now (it’s not much of a pre-order), but what’s interesting is that it asks you to choose between 3G modules for Vodafone, Orange, or AT&T. That means ITG seemingly has aspirations of a global release for this thing, and while we’re not sure how many people are going to want to lug around a MID-sized monster celly with a “super big” 4.8-inch LCD and a weight of nearly a pound, surely some nation in the world has pockets big enough for this.

Microsoft says OEMs pay about $50 for Windows on a $1,000 PC

September 16, 2009

There’s been no shortage of rumors and speculation about how much Microsoft charges OEMs for a copy of Windows over the years, but Microsoft itself has stayed fairly mum on the matter — until this week, that is. Speaking at the Jefferies Annual Technology Conference, Microsoft exec Charles Songhurst revealed for the first time that the company has “always charged about $50″ for a copy of Windows on the average $1,000 PC, or about 5% of the total cost. Songhurst also seems to imply that Microsoft is looking to get about 5% across the board for Windows, meaning that it can rake in some impressive profits on high-end PCs while still being able to offer Windows on the cheap for netbooks or $300 desktops. Songhurst even went so far as to say that cheap PCs are a net benefit for Microsoft so long as they are “not cannibalistic to the total PC demand,” and he and unsurprisingly further went on to extol the virtues of Windows 7, saying that it is a “compellingly good product,” and that “when Windows is executing well, Microsoft is in good shape.”

[Thanks, Sammy]

Sinchun’s 8.9-inch UMPC-891A holds onto the past with XP

September 15, 2009

Sinchun got the price right: 2999 Yuan (about $439 US), and the netbook-style specs make a lot of sense for this form factor. Unfortunately, Windows XP does not. Paired up against a stylus-driven 1024 x 600 touchscreen, Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and a variety of smallish SSD options, there’s plenty of room for 7’s touch enhancements to shine on the UMPC-891A — but not enough expanse for them to choke up. Of course, there’s nothing stopping you from slapping it on yourself. The biggest point of caution here is the 2 hour quoted battery life — let’s hope the Archos 9pctablet brings us a truly helpful amount of battery life in the UMPC space.

Sinchun’s UMPC-501 5-inch tablet makes its grand entrance

September 10, 2009

You know, for all the buzz surrounding Android-powered MIDs — most of which we’ll probably never see — it sure is nice to see an actual device that’s ready to hit the shelves for a change. Case in point: the UMPC-501 A is a rather nondescript 5-inch (800 x 480) touchscreen device by Sinchun Electronic Co., a company located deep within the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. Weighing a mere 350g and measuring 6.3 x 3.75 x .87 inches, this bad boy sports a 1.1GHz Atom Z510 processor, 1G RAM, SSD storage (size to be determined), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, 3G, a SiRF Star III GPS, a removable battery (so this is definitely not the Apple Tablet then?) and ships with Windows XP Home (yeah, guess not). Barring any unforeseen events, it should be available sometime this month for under 3000 Yuan ($441). Now if only someone would stick this thing to a fridge. Get a closer look after the break.

How-To: Install Windows 7 and live to tell about it

August 11, 2009

So you’re thinking about going to Windows 7, eh? Chances are your head is swimming in a sea of TLAs and confusing charts — enough to have the most adamant Microsoft defender reaching for a something with an Option key. Fear not, noble purchaser of legal software. Though XP users have been punished for skipping Vista by not being able to directly upgrade now, the process of backing up your data, formatting and installing Windows, and then restoring your goods again has never been easier — even if you’re on a netbook with less storage than your smartphone. Vista users have even less to worry about. We’ll have our full impressions of the finally finalized OS later this week, but for now let’s journey hand in hand down the gently sloped path of the upgrade process.

Official Windows 7 upgrade chart is ridiculous

August 6, 2009

This is seriously Microsoft’s Windows 7 upgrade chart, and it’s ridiculous. It manages to highlight the insanity of shipping multiple OS versions while totally minimizing the good news: most Vista users will be able to upgrade in place to the corresponding 32- or 64-bit version of 7. That should cover the vast majority of people running Vista, but if you’re still on XP or you’re trying to do anything out of the ordinary you’d better get ready for some pain: all those ominous blue boxes require you to back up, wipe your drive, and reinstall a totally clean copy of 7. You heard that right — the Windows 7 installer won’t even try to retain your data and programs if you’re not updating from the corresponding version of Vista. Pretty lame move, considering Microsoft is currently selling millions of copies of XP on netbooks and will sell XP downgrades until 2011 — sure, we get that most netbook owners aren’t going to spring for 7, but it’s insane that you can’t just pop in a disc and upgrade. Of course, now that 7’s been released to manufacturing and the final bits are available there’s not much to be done, so let’s all just take a moment to contemplate the fact that Ed Bott at ZDNet managed to totally outdo Redmond’s infographics people with a much friendlier chart with “about an hour” of work — check it below.

Microsoft giving Europeans with Windows XP and Vista choice of browser, too

July 29, 2009

As it turns out, it won’t just be Windows 7 that’ll be giving Europeans a choice of what web browser to use. In fact, the lengths that Microsoft is going to appease the European Commission is quite extreme. Ars Technica did some digging and here’s the fine print of the proposal. Within three to six months of the EC’s approval, an update will be sent out to Europeans with Windows XP and Vista, labeled “high priority” or “important.” User who install the update and have Internet Explorer as the default browser will see the ballot screen on next log in, which will show up to ten different browsers with at least a 0.5 percent share of the market in the European Economic Area (EEA). Users can then choose to download something new, ignore the screen, or defer until an indefinite time in the future. Windows 7 users will get the ballot update within two weeks of the Commission’s decision or by its October 22nd launch, whichever comes second. Extreme? You betcha — but we can’t argue over having more choice.

[Thanks, Adrian]

Microsoft to launch music streaming service "imminently," could tie-in with Xbox / Zune

July 14, 2009

While even bigwigs can fudge release numbers from time to time, the word “imminently” just carries a certain aura. Speaking with The Telegraph, executive producer of MSN Peter Bale confessed that Microsoft was “looking at launching a music streaming service imminently.” As in, maybe before the dawn of August. Bale added that it would be “a similar principle to Spotify,” but the outfit is still examining exactly how the business model would work. It’s expected that the service would let users stream tunes for free so long as they listen to ads every half hour or so, but for those with too little time and too many jams, there could be a paid option that strips the plugs. What’s unclear now, however, is exactly how this initiative will tie-in with the company’s Xbox 360 and Zune. There’s no doubt that Microsoft is aiming to make the former an all-encompassing multimedia box, but we’re sure it’d rather not convolute things with Zune Pass all the same.
