PSP Go ‘relaunch’ in the works?

There’s not much to go on here, but according to alleged sources of Gamervision, Sony’s planning a relaunch of sorts for the PSP Go. The oft-maligned portable hasn’t exactly taken the world by storm — and with its lack of an UMD drive, despite the company’s continued support of the format, that arguably wasn’t the point of its existence, anyway. An apparent marketing blitz is in the cards (unsurprising), and additionally there’s speculation that a price drop might be coming, too. That seems a bit early given it only launched back in October, but if the company’s really wanting to get aggressive and pushing units of its admittedly pretty hardware, that’s a pretty good way to do so. Then again, its hands might be full adding some vigor to its other gaming machine.

Sony PSPs enlisted as study aids by the Royal Navy

Whoever it was at Sony HQ that decided to pursue “military contracts” as a revenue source, kudos! Mere days after the US Air Force expressed interest in expanding its PS3 supercomputer, we’re hearing glorious Britannia’s Royal Navy has conscripted 230 PSPs into duty as revision aids for its trainee sailors. Loaded with maths and physics materials, the PSPs can be used in a bunk, have familiar controls for the young and mostly male recruits, and are considered pretty tough to break. The underlying reason for this move though is cost cutting: by making the training course more intensive, the Navy is saving on teaching time. Given that the UMD drive won’t come disabled — which is hoped to encourage the sailors to take better care of the device — the future this paints is of marines who’ve spent more time with a freebie handheld console than with a pro instructor. At least they’ll have a great stable of captured monsters to show for it.

Sony’s Blu-ray digital copies tested on PS3, PSP

We’ve seen digital copies of Blu-ray via separate DVDs before (e.g. Watchmen), and just recently Sony finally cut out of the middle disc and put the transferable video on the high-def disc itself. Joystiq recently showcased how it’s done using a copy of Godzilla and a PlayStation 3. For this you’ll need a PSN account and the 12-digit code included in the disc case. The standard definition video, here clocking in at 2GB, will copy to the hard drive (not a separate download, thankfully), and then if you want to the PSP. All in all, it’s approximately a five-minute process. We can’t help but agree, the early batch of supported films — The Ugly Truth, Angels & Demons, and Godzilla from 1998 — isn’t exactly fine cinema dining, but surely this is just a sign of things to come. Amazon offers $50 PSN card with PSP Go purchases, for tonight only

Hey impulse buyers, want a PSP Go? Amazon is offering a $50 PSN card for anyone who picks up the portable tonight, in black or white. Seeing as you’ll be having to spend that much on digital titles anyway, it’s a pretty good long-term $50 discount, bringing the suggested value of the Go to about $195. It’s still not as financially sound an option as a PSP-3000, but if you value style over price figures and disc-based media, this might be one of the best incentives before Christmas. Offer ends at midnight PT / 3:00AM ET — after that, it turns right back into a pumpkin.

RealView’s V-Screen for PSP review

The PSP may be a lot of things to a lot of people, but it’s not capable of pumping out images in 3D — cross your eyes all you want but nothing’s going to leap off of that LCD. We’ll have to wait for at least another iteration of portables before we can start expecting any miracles in that department, but until then there’s the V-Screen! It’s a big, silly-looking attachment that pledges to add depth to your PSP games despite the system’s distinctly two-dimensional screen. Is it magic? Is it sorcery? Is it complete bull? You might be surprised.

Sony’s PSPgo sells 28,000 units on first day in Japan, physical media points and laughs

Remember the “platform sales boost” that Sony was tauting after the PSPgo’s release in the US? The question on everyone’s minds was of course how much of that boost was buoyed by the new kid on the block, and while Sony still hasn’t given us any domestic figures (nor will it ever, probably), we now know that the thing sold 28,000 units on its first day of availability on its home turf in Japan. That’s certainly better than the measly 1,000 units moved in Australia over the same period, but hardly encouraging when you look at its predecessors. According to Media Create the original PSP sold 171,963 units in a day in Japan. The PSP-2000? 130,000. UMD may be hated by everyone, but it seems to still have legs.

How would you change Sony’s PSP Go?

Sony’s PSP Go hasn’t had the warmest reception of all time or anything, but does it really deserve all the negative vibes being flung its way? The UMD-less console leaked way earlier than Sony intended, but after a proper launch and you inevitably trekking out to snag one, we’re curious to know whether or not you’re enjoying things. Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime says the PSP Go has a ‘fundamental concept problem’

Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime has been known to take a few shots at the competition in the past and, while he’s not exactly verging into CE-oh no he didn’t territory this time around, it seems that he just couldn’t help himself from offering a few thoughts on Sony’s latest handheld. Speaking with The Washington Post, Reggie says that the PSP Go has a “fundamental concept problem in terms of ‘Who’s it for?’ and ‘What’s the benefit?” — adding that he always has the “utmost respect for all our competitors, but that it’s “interesting to try and answer the consumer question of ‘What’s in it for me?’ in that product.” Of course, Sony does have a few answers to those questions for its part, sort of.

PSP Go scores its first mod job, a handful of white LEDs find a new purpose in life

Who knows what it is about the PSP that engenders such a loyal following of hackers — both on the hardware and software side. Some of the hardware hacks we’ve seen are no doubt more impressive than others, but they’re all united in a common disregard for warranties and for the most part a deep affection for LEDs. The first PSP Go mod we’ve seen, done up by roro3030 over at AcidMods, keeps things simple with some strategic, tasteful white LED placement. It’s all internally powered and pretty seamless, and provides a nice jumping off point for a community that will be no-doubt eager to consume the PSP Go as a new challenge — even if the rest of us are busy making frowny faces at that endlessly derided price tag. PSP firmware 6.10 brings Bluetooth internet tethering to the PSP Go

The PSP Go isn’t even out yet and Sony’s already dishing out the feature updates — PSP firmware 6.10, announced today, allows the slider handheld to tether to your cellphone over Bluetooth for remote internet access. That’s actually a pretty handy feature for a system that relies on network game distribution, don’t you think? That’s not all, however: all PSPs will get a new XMB feature called SensMe which can generate playlists based on “moods,” and the PC-based MediaGo software is being updated as well. Sony thinks its "aspirational" PSP Go might encourage an uptick in PSP-3000 purchases

We’ve heard plenty of arguments for high priced products before — many of them from Sony, oddly enough — but this has to one of the odder ones. Sony UK’s Claire Blackhouse says that Sony was actually expecting a greater backlash from retailers than it got in regards to the PSP Go, and that many retailers are seeing the new launch as a way to get consumers into stores, at which point they’ll realize they’re too poor for a PSP Go and might end walking out with a PSP-3000 instead. Sadly, the logic sounds pretty sound, though Claire’s own suggestions that some families might get a PSP Go for dad and PSP 3000s for the kids seems a little fantastical — kinda hard for dad to rock those Hannah Montana UMDs, yeah Sony?

PSP Go review

At last, Sony’s other worst-kept secret, the UMD-less PSP Go, is working its way through retail channels this week. The device itself is a marked improvement, but of course that’s not the whole story. In many ways antithetical to the hype surrounding the PlayStation 3 Slim, the debut of the Go has been marred by some pretty downtrodden decisions on Sony’s part, most notably the $250 price tag, an utter lack of compatibility with any previous PSP accessories, and no UMD conversion program. Sony America abandons UMD-to-PSP Go "good will" program, offers 225 games at full retail price instead

You know that UMD-to-PSP Go conversion program? Ain’t gonna happen. The “good will” program that would have provided free (or at least heavily discounted) digital copies of games already purchased on UMD discs has been scrapped. A spokesman for SCEA said, “We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time.” Adding insult to injury, the PSP Go Rewards program offering 3 free games to European UMD owners will not be offered in the US. That’s the bad news. The not so bad news is that 16,000 pieces of digital content will be available for the US PSP Go launch on October 1st. These include 225 downloadable games (full PSP titles, PSN exclusives, UMD legacy titles, and Minis), 2,300 films, and 13,300 television episodes. Still, not quite the “at least 300″ digital games we were expecting. So US PSP owners, still planning to “upgrade?”

Sony hacks 15 percent from PSP’s price in Japan

While Sony seemed more than willing to show off its new PSP Go Converter and even more willing to gloat about its one millionth PS3 Slim sale, this little tidbit was pushed away in some neglected corner of the Tokyo Game Show. Thankfully for you, we’re dedicated to leaving no stone unturned, and now we’ve discovered that the outfit is fixing to cut 15 percent from the PSP-3000’s price tag… but only in Japan. Starting on October 1st, the UMD-friendly handheld will be offered in The Land of the Rising Sun for ¥16,800, or just over $185 using current conversion tables. So Sony — any plans to hook the rest of the world up? You don’t want to see us pout.
