iPhone and Magic Mouse linked up by BTstack (video)
January 4, 2010
Even though you probably still can’t figure out what good the ability to connect your Bluetooth keyboard to your iPhone will do, the BTstack project is steaming ahead with this demo of a connected Magic Mouse twirling its pointer all over Apple’s handset. The driver code is still unreleased, but we get to see some nice lag-free interaction between the two devices, suggesting it shouldn’t be too far away from public consumption. As if to answer your earlier quandary, the video also features a Celluon CL800BT virtual keyboard, which projects onto and responds to your touch of any flat surface. A gimmick most likely, but a fun journey into the dream of nomadic computing nonetheless. Check out all the action after the break.
[Thanks, Daniel]

Apple’s Magic Mouse now shipping: seeks mighty revenge
October 29, 2009

Apple’s Mighty Mouse was one of the most loved and loathed rodents of all time. When it worked, it was a magnificent productivity booster for Mac users. Unfortunately, over time, even after hours and hours of vigorous rubbing, the top-mounted trackball would become so ensnared in hand-jam that owners were left with two options: delicately splay the mouse for a bit of X-acto home surgery… or smash it with a vengeance hammer until justice is served. So maybe now you can understand all the hopeful fuss made over its successor: the Magic Mouse. It’s now shipping to those of you who ordered it separately from its iMac bundle. Snow Leopard users can even download the software update now so that all those multi-touch and gestural features will be enabled once the bluetooth mouse arrives. Then we’ll see if this is the mouse that rights all those wrongs.

Steve Ballmer hasn’t seen the Courier video, promises Zune integration in next WinMo release
October 22, 2009

We just got off stage with Steve Ballmer, where we garnered a blistering 40 minutes of wild conversation with the man, touching on all things Microsoft. Of course, Windows 7 was at the forefront of talking points, be we also got Ballmer chatting up that Courier vid, and the lack of Zune integration on Windows Mobile. For the former he swears he hasn’t actually seen it, but that it sounds like it’s something someone should make, while for Zune he says Windows Mobile is going to get integration in the next release — which is a comforting thought, if perhaps a bit late. Of course there’s plenty more to what he said, and we’ll have an HD version of the whole show up tomorrow so you can sit back and take it all in if you missed the live shindig.

LG intros ultrathin Win7-powered X-Note T380
October 22, 2009
We’re still struggling to figure out why every PC maker in the universe has decided to debut at least one or two new Windows 7 machines today, but while we spin our wheels in frustration, we’ll point you in the direction of LG’s latest. The X-Note T380 is a 13.3-inch ultraportable powered by a Core 2 Duo SU3700 and featuring 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a GMA 4500MHD graphics set, 500GB of hard drive space, 802.11a/g/n WiFi and Win7 Home Premium. In related news, the outfit also updated its X-Note P510 to include Microsoft’s newest, shiniest operating system, though otherwise it’s remaining exactly the same. Price and release for the little guy has yet to be determined, but judging by just how stoked that lady appears, we’d say it’ll be worth whatever LG decides to charge.

Samsung and TeliaSonera bringing LTE to vikings in 2010
October 22, 2009

Scandinavian folks tend to be a pretty cheerful bunch during the summer, and now Swedes and Norwegians will have reason to smile through the cold dark winters as well, with Samsung announcing an agreement to provide TeliaSonera with “mobile broadband devices for commercial service next year.” This agreement relates to Sammy’s Kalmia 4G USB modem and adds to the Swedish operator’s LTE push, which already counts Ericsson and Huawei among the contracted hardware providers. So that’s 100Mbps mobile broadband, coming to a snow-covered nation near you within the next dozen months or so. All we would ask of our viking friends now is that they remember their world-conquering ways of the past and start spreading that goodness globally. Come on, it’s our right!
Samsung and TeliaSonera Gear Up for 4G Mobile Service
Seoul, Korea, October 22, 2009 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the leading mobile phone and equipment provider, today announced a contract with TeliaSonera to provide Long Term Evolution (LTE) devices. LTE technology is one of the most anticipated technologies for 4thgeneration (4G) mobile service in the telecommunications industry. According to the contract between Samsung and TeliaSonera, a leading telecommunication service provider in the Nordic and Baltic countries and the emerging markets of Eurasia head-quartered in Sweden, Samsung will provide mobile broadband devices for commercial service in Sweden and Norway next year.
“We are very pleased to work together with TeliaSonera for this historic step forward in the modern telecommunications industry. With TeliaSonera’s initiation of LTE service, we hope more consumers to enjoy advanced mobile broadband service much earlier than expected,” said JK Shin, executive vice president and head of the Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung is committed to providing the best and the latest LTE devices to TeliaSonera and will fully support the commercial service in Sweden and Norway next year.”
“The 4G modems from Samsung will play a very important part of our 4G launch in Sweden and Norway,” says Kenneth Karlberg, President and Head of Mobility Services, TeliaSonera. “We look forward to sharing Samsung’s world leading mobile experience and that we together will offer our customers a whole new way of enjoying mobility services.”
The Samsung LTE device (Model name: GT-B3710) is expected to be the world’s first LTE device. The device is a USB stick that can be connected to a laptop computer, or other portable devices. The USB stick incorporates Samsung’s in-house developed LTE modem chip, branded Kalmia, and supports 2.6GHz band for LTE service.
With this contract, Samsung has again demonstrated its leadership in advanced mobile technology within the mobile industry and telecommunication standardization communities. Samsung’s LTE solution is fully compliant with the latest 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) LTE Release 8 (Rel-8) standard. Based on its number of contributions, Samsung ranks as one of the top companies within the 3GPP, the association that specified the LTE standard. Samsung also has four seats on the wireless networking standardization working group executive board.

Magic Mouse post-teardown loses some of its dark arts charm
October 22, 2009
Were you expecting unicorn tears or something? iFixit keeps working to finish its list of teardown to-dos, this time with Apple’s new Magic Mouse. It probably comes as no surprise, but just under the top surfaces lies a considerable number of capacitive sensors, and other than that, there really isn’t a lot to gaze upon. Then again, if you tend to fancy the ins and outs if gears and gizmos, this should be right up your alley.

Google, Verizon team up to throw support behind FCC’s net neutrality push
October 21, 2009
Google and [insert any wireless carrier here] are the last two entities in the world that we’d expect to issue a joint statement on net neutrality, seeing how Google firmly believes the FCC should enforce it regardless of medium while carriers generally want to be exempted — but Verizon and The Goog have put their differences aside for just one day to put together a thoughtful, lengthy piece on the subject. There aren’t any surprises in the piece other than the fact that CEOs Lowell McAdam and Eric Schmidt are personally attributed to the statement, but it echoes what most ISPs have been saying since new FCC chair Julius Genachowski came into play: they generally acknowledge that a free, unhindered internet has led to a better world and that it’s in everyone’s best interest to make sure that it continues to be that way. They go on to say that “there will be disagreements along the way” — Google and Verizon don’t see eye-to-eye on the finer points, for example — but that they’re all looking forward to a spirited debate with the folks over in Washington. Ultimately, the FCC’s ability to effectively police true neutrality on wireless networks ties in deeply with its ability to free up a lot more spectrum — something the CTIA’s been pushing for lately — and Genachowski recently mentioned that they’d be looking into it, so this could all end up working out without any broken hearts or black eyes.

Microsoft makes a funny with Marketplace ‘apps lab’
October 21, 2009

It’s another Microsoft video, another few minutes of hilarious, unintentional pain. This time Microsoft is tackling the topic of apps, riffing on the abundance of gimmick apps for the iPhone. Unfortunately for Microsoft, we’d think the last thing it would want to do is draw comparisons between Apple’s App Store and the company’s freshly minted Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Video is after the break.

Verizon hosting Droid event on October 28
October 21, 2009

Verizon has yet to give a firm date on when we can all get our hands on some Droids, but we know one thing’s for certain: it’ll be fully revealed for the first time one week from today, October 28. The invitation that’s been extended to the media confirms that it’ll come from Motorola (of course), it’ll be Verizon’s “must-have device of the year,” and it’s got a very close association with giant, scary, glowing eyes. A far cry from Google’s friendly green bot, isn’t it?

Review: WowWee Roborover gets friendly with your furniture
October 21, 2009

See that glowing face? Yep, it’s the super-enthusiastic Roborover from WowWee. We won’t lie: we were a bit stoked by the arrival of this yellow explorer at Engadget’s doorstep. Too bad it didn’t exactly walk all the way from its warehouse, forcing us to go through the painful procedure of cutting up the tapes and untangling the ties of its shipping box. Five minutes later we’ve got a 4-pound robot on our hands, and we’d say overall the build quality is an eight out of ten (the cuts on the plastic parts could do with a finer finish) which is pretty good for a toy. You’ll be pleased to know that those treads are for real and supported by a third mini roller at the back, but the friendly manual does say, “For indoor use only.” Think we’ll skip that page, thank you. Now kids, you might need your daddy’s screwdrivers and some extra cash to feed the Roborover three “C” size batteries, and another three “AAA” ones for the chunky IR remote. All ready to go? Skip along to learn how the Roborover explores the “ancient tombs of your parents’ closet.”

BlackBerry Bold 9700 gets handled, appreciated for its nuances
October 21, 2009
Our dear colleagues over at Engadget German have had a chance to play with RIM’s just-announced BlackBerry Bold 9700 today, and every indication we’ve gotten is that this thing is a perfect — if not extremely conservative — successor to the first-generation Bold. Interface and network speed are both praised (both the 9700 and the Bold before it feature a 624MHz core, so there’s some magic going on here) and the microSD card is now hot-swappable, meaning that you’ve got a theoretically limitless supply of storage space if you happen to be carrying around a pocketful of 16GB cards. Check out the full gallery below, and naturally, stay tuned for a review of this bad boy just as soon as is humanly possible.

OnStar’s Stolen Vehicle Slowdown used to recover carjacked vehicle, baffle carjacker (video)
October 21, 2009
So, picture this. You get the itch to start some chaos at around 3AM local time. You snatch up your stolen shotgun, load a few slugs in there and roll out with a mind to come home in a shiny new vehicle. As fate would have it, you choose to carjack a 2009 Chevy Tahoe, and while everything seems kosher at first (look, there’s even a half-full bottle of Coke Zero over there!), the mighty V8 just seems to be struggling all of a sudden. As the horrifying reality sets in (you know, the one that involves the accelerator not functioning any longer), you’re left with no choice but to curse OnStar’s Stolen Vehicle Slowdown feature, which has just nabbed its first-ever criminal. As the Tahoe slowly grinds to a halt, you make a fruitless dash and topple into a swimming pool before being apprehended soaking wet, and even though OnStar took just 16 minutes to return the vehicle to its rightful owner, at least you’ll go down in history as the first one to fall victim to the system. Here’s to you, unfortunate carjacker — next time, go for a lawnmower. Humiliating video is after the break.

Altec Lansing Stage-Gig monitor further enforces faux rock fantasies
October 21, 2009
And you thought $300 fake guitars were too much? They ain’t got nothing — nothing — on this. Altec Lansing, the outfit famous for making those tinny speakers slammed into your laptop, has just popped out what could very well be the most hilarious non-KIRF product of the year. The Stage-Gig is modeled after a traditional wedge monitor, complete with the perforated grille, white spray-paint logo and carry handle (for “authentic roadie portability”). Within, you’ll find a 6.5-inch driver and a 40-watt amplifier, and the idea here is to plug your console’s audio directly in, enabling the Rock Band / Guitar Hero axe-slinger in your life to feel as if they’re “playing in a live concert.” It’ll land next month for $99.95, and despite the fact that we can’t stifle our chuckling, we want one in the worst way. And so do you, Dr. Love.

Solid Alliance’s new earbuds are ‘crazy,’ ugly
October 21, 2009
So, you broke the bank (and several credit cards) picking up that uber-stylish Acronym GT-J14 earbud-friendly jacket only to find that no one even noticed? Or perhaps your Lady GaGa-approved beats couldn’t endure the Paris Is Burning-style bad craziness you put ‘em through? Well, it looks like it’s time to sell a pint of plasma and use the cash for some psychedelic (and highly unfortunate) Crazy Earphones from Solid Alliance. Featuring a banana, a kitty paw print, sushi, or a Frankenstein’s monster-esque bolt affectation, we promise you that a pair of these will get you noticed. But not in the good way. Pre-order now for $22, shipping in December.

Yamaha’s PDX-60 wireless iPod / iPhone dock adds yAired to the lexicon
October 21, 2009

Sony’s got its S-AIR, Yamaha has its yAired — so, what of it? The outfit famous for making just about everything from ATVs to wicked soundbars has today introduced a classy addition to the oversaturated iPod / iPhone sound system market: the PDX-60. Apple loyalists simply dock their media player in the wireless base and watch as the tunes are streamed effortlessly into the magical box on the other side. There’s also remote control capability for keeping tabs on that playlist whilst planted on the sofa, and the dock can even power on and off automatically with “yAired-enabled iPhones / iPods.” The music maker itself boasts a pair of 3.25-inch speakers and a digital amplifier of undisclosed wattage, and it’s available in black, gray, blue or pink for $299.95. So, any takers, or are you stickin’ with Bose?

Raytheon deploying Android-powered RATS on battlefields in Afghanistan and Pakistan
October 21, 2009
Android, Android everywhere. Android, Android in my hair. In my Nook and in my car, in my netbook and in my… wait, Afghanistan? It seems defense contractor Raytheon, creators of the famous “pain ray“, have launched a device called RATS: the Raytheon Android Tactical System. It allows soldiers to mark other soldiers and even UAVs as “buddies,” then track their position in real time on a map, even picking up streaming video coming from above — sort of like Latitude but putting a whole new spin on stalking. No word on how soldiers like their new devices so far, but once a Twitter app is added we’re sure they won’t shut up about it.

Geek Squad visa application approved, Best Buy opening stores in UK
October 21, 2009
We know you’re worried what will happen; we saw that Liam Neeson movie too, the one where the daughter goes abroad and gets kidnapped and only after killing 351 people does he get her back. Taking trips to Europe can be risky, but our Best Buy is old enough and responsible and can take care of itself, so we’re okay with it taking a trip to the UK next year… even though we don’t know exactly where it’ll be landing. It’s been talking about going for so long it’d be a shame to say no now. Yes, it’ll be packing its blue shirts and yellow name tags so everyone will know what it is, and once it gets there sometime next year we’re sure it’ll call and tell us which franchise location will be first. So until then just try not to worry — and maybe sign it up for some self defense classes or something.
[Thanks, Adam]

BlackBerry Bold 9700 announced, launching globally starting next month
October 21, 2009
Properly replacing one of the most popular, recognizable BlackBerrys ever made is no easy task for RIM, but it looks like they’ve done a respectable job in officially announcing the Bold 9700, a device we’ve seen rumored as the “Onyx” through much of 2009. The new model gently massages the original Bold’s time-tested formula by moving the camera up to 3.2 megapixels, giving the screen another 40 lines of vertical resolution (480 x 360, up from 480 x 320), and shipping with the brand new BlackBerry OS 5.0 out of the gate. Also notable is that the 9700 replaces the trackball with an optical trackpad –continuing a trend started by the Curve 8520 — and will ship in both 900 / 1700 / 2100 and 800 / 850 / 1900 / 2100MHz 3G varieties, making the phone a perfect fit for AT&T, T-Mobile, and a multitude of networks in Canada and Europe. RIM isn’t announcing specific carrier availability, but they’re teasing that it’ll be coming on “carriers around the world” starting in November. Follow the break for a quick teaser video from the boys and girls up in Waterloo.
Update: Engadget Germany is at the launch event with RIM’s co-CEO Mike Lazaridis. We’ll be back shortly with a hands-on.
Update 2: T-Mobile just announced its flavor of the Bold 9700 for the US which it says will be the first BlackBerry that allows voice calling over WiFi.
