Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLX: Nokia N93 knocked off, with an added Engadget bonus!

January 12, 2010

This strange NOKLA knock-off combines the Nokia brand-name, elements of the iPhone’s UI, and the admittedly ho-hum specs of your typical KIRF phone (including a 2.8-inch resistive touchscreen, 1.3 megapixel camera, and WiFi). If all that isn’t enough to warn you off this device there’s always that weird fin that extends considerably from one side — which can’t be comfortable when you’re trying to use this phone as, you know, a phone. But the most shocking part of this whole mess is the “Nokia” logo itself. Take a closer look: it’s really familiar, right? We’re glad to know that we’ve had such a powerful impact on the KIRF industry-at-large! All that said, we’re not here to judge — if your self-hatred extends to your choice in handsets, hit the source link to hunt one of these down for yourself.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLIX: Cool K07 is the ultimate facePalm

January 5, 2010

Yeah, yeah — we’ve seen a fairly weak effort to ape the Pre before, but this… this is the knockoff webOS device your shady side has been waiting for. A dead ringer for the Palm Pre, the Cool K07 boasts a luscious 2.8-inch touchscreen (320 x 240 resolution), a T-Flash card slot, a 2 megapixel camera, inbuilt speaker, MP3 / MP4 player, a blazing fast connection to the web (GPRS, if you must know), Bluetooth, an FM radio tuner, alarm clock, a few games and room for 1,000 contacts. Granted, there’s none of that fancy “Synergy” stuff, and we’re guessing you won’t find any “cards” or “multitasking” here, but for $128 unlocked and room for the SIM card of your choice, how on Earth could you complain? Exactly. You can’t. Or maybe that’s just stunned silence we hear…

[Thanks, Dechris]

n’Gadgets store has us pondering a name change, new line of business

January 2, 2010

Engadget’s iconic and recognizable logo has a long history of being used in unauthorized ways. We should probably be appalled or something, but we’ll leave that to the lawyers — because we can’t help but find it amusing. This time around, it’s Batteries n’Gadgets — a store at a mall in Toronto — that saw fit to take liberties with our logo. Nice work, Canada!

[Thanks, David]

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLVIII: Xderia X2 packs 2X the KIRF

December 28, 2009

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X2 may have been delayed until next month, but official delays have never held back the inevitable KIRF hordes, as exemplified by this intriguing “Xderia X2.” Not content with simply approximating SE’s stylish QWERTY slider, this one goes the extra mile with a KIRF edition of Windows Mobile, not to mention some impressive specs like a 12.1 megapixel camera, dual SIM card slots, and a built-in FM radio — which may or may not match the phone’s actual specs. No word on a price just yet, but we’re guessing you’ll be able to buy anywhere from four to fourteen of these for the price of an actual X2.

Keepin' it real fake, part CCXLVI: MP3/AVI/MP4 Player has 'stylish designer style' courtesy of Apple

It doesn’t get much better than this, folks. If KIRF is an art form this right here is your Mona Lisa, your Starry Night, your… painting with that dude screaming on a wharf. You know the one. Anyway, this is about the best iPod Nano knockoff we’ve ever seen, cloning that flat, proprietary connector and sporting a UI that would make the most ardent of Apple fanboys look twice. It has a camera on the back like the 5G, but trumps the Nano with support for a predictably wide suite of file formats and a price of just $33.25. A bargain, so long as you don’t mind the measly 2GB of storage and the nagging sense of guilt that comes with buying a fake — even if it is a spectacularly good one.

[Thanks, Larry]

Meizu M8 app store to become reality this month?

December 9, 2009

Now that Meizu is setting the M8 up with some new firmware and further turning its back on the handset’s KIRFish origins, how about an app store? Apparently that’s exactly what’s happening, as the following video will attest. Not too many details here — it’s called MyStore, and the company is planning to split revenue with developers 30 / 70. The store is currently being tested internally, and with any luck it should see the light of day as a part of the new firmware release later this month. If you’ve been dying for a chance to play a Chinese knockoff of BubbleWrap, that day is finally drawing near! See for yourself after the break.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLIV: Zoho’s E72 is made in China, has Finland doing a double-take

November 28, 2009

Having trouble getting your hands on that Nokia E72? Perhaps you favor a handset with a TV tuner? Zoho’s KIRF E72 features the aforementioned tuner, dual sim, QWERTY keypad, WiFi, JAVA, FM tuner, and both rear and front-facing 1.3MP cameras. Rest assured, the UI looks nothing like what you’d get with from Finland. But did we mention that you could watch TV on the thing? Video after the break.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLIII: faux MacBook Air review (video)

November 25, 2009

Our good friends at Shanzai.com have recently got their hands on what they believe to be the king of all MacBook Air KIRFs, and put it through the ringer. Expecting a laugh riot? Not so fast — what we have here is a pretty decent netbook, apparently. Features include an Intel Atom N280, 13-inch display, good build quality, a form factor similar in size and weight to Apple’s original, a real chicklet keyboard, a remote control, and I/O options rivaling the original (including an Ethernet port, two USB ports, and HDMI). Not bad for $260. But don’t take our word for it — peep the video after the break for the whole sordid tale.

Chinese Dreamcast portable mod may inspire KIRFs, or already is one

November 22, 2009

You thought the DreamTrooper would be the last portablized Sega Dreamcast mod you’d ever see? Nah. Turns out some folk in China quietly showed off an Oriental take on the mod — not too dissimilar from the form factor of the GameBoy Advance — just before the DreamTrooper’s debut. Details are thin here, but we’re hoping for a built-in optical drive and a decent battery life. If we’re lucky, some KIRF makers might pick up this idea and revive the legendary Dreamcast brand, so don’t go selling your dusty game collection on eBay just yet. Go ahead and watch some The King of Fighters action after the break. We know the Swirl still captivates your heart.

This Google’s made from 100% Virgin pulp, not chrome

November 20, 2009

Hey, it may not be from California but at least this KIRF’s registered with the Vietnamese trademark office (right). Anywho, according to Google’s own machine translation, the subtext of this product reads, “Very long, soft, smooth. Of high vacuum, because you always!” Reflect on that while you pick up the simmering scraps of your mind — work can wait.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLI: PXP 2000 is not a PSP Go, but it gets a loving unboxing anyway

November 15, 2009

You know how we love a good knockoff at Engadget. Well, the PXP 2000 isn’t the greatest KIRF we’ve ever seen — especially considering that it’s a “PSP Go” that plays NES games (and pretty badly at that). It is, however, one of the most caring and detailed unboxings we’ve seen in a really long time. In the nearly 15-minute video (which we’ve included after the break), the young gentleman host proves himself to be a talented and fairly entertaining chap. Be sure to watch the video all the way through — you’ll get to see some Super Mario Brothers action as well as the PXP’s super fantastic iPhone camera icon. Also, someone who we can only describe as Jason Voorhees-esque makes a guest appearance about halfway in. Hit the read link for the whole, wild ride.

[Thanks, Nightwheel]

Blinged out Michael Jackson phone is fashionably late

November 6, 2009

Michael Jackson may never take the stage again, but that doesn’t mean you can’t commemorate him in your pocket, right? This special, “limited edition” mobile phone appears to have been dipped in gold and diamonds, and, if we’re not mistaken… it’s basically a Vertu KIRF that’s dressed like a headless MJ? We’re pretty light on specs and pricing information here, but rest assured that unless you live in China, you’ll probably never be able to get your be-gloved hand on one of these. Nothing like cashing in on the dead.

iiView A2 borrows Apple’s panache for a Win 7 netbook

October 19, 2009

Manufacturers the world over have given this one some serious thought, and they’ve decided that you want something that feels like a MacBook Air, looks (vaguely) like a MacBook Air, and doesn’t run OS X. Available come October 22, the iiView A2 features an Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz CPU, 2GB DDR2 RAM, 320GB HDD, a 12.1-inch display, and 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless. Shipping for $399 with Windows 7, this guy will look right at home next to your award-winning collection of Air KIRFs — and won’t break the bank in the process. Hit that read link for more info.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXXXVIII: Palm Pre knockoff doesn’t know what it wants to be when it grows up

October 9, 2009

Yes, this was only a matter of time, and we’re a little surprised we didn’t see one earlier. Regardless, this is the Palm Pre knockoff we’ve been waiting for. Seemingly called just iPhone +QWERTY — this KIRF is being marketed as just that — a real business phone with a hybrid identity blending the BlackBerry and the iPhone. And really, that’s not too bad of a description for this little dude, we guess. Boasting analog TV, Bluetooth, and an FM radio, it runs the much-loved OPhone operating system, and can be had for 600 RMP (about $88). There are two more shots after the break. Hit the read link for a full peek.

China’s KIRF marketplace captured on hidden camera

October 7, 2009

Love ‘em, loathe ‘em, or love to loathe ‘em as you will, but the humble KIRF has a big place in our geek DNA — that’s why we were tickled when the gang over at Shanzhai.com paid the markets of Shenzhen, China, a 60 Minutes-esque visit complete with hidden camera. Although we’ve been hearing tales for years now about the legendary stalls deep in the heart of KIRFdom, Western visitors have rarely made the trip — until now! And this clip has it all, including one of our all-time favorite head scratchers: the Buddha handset. But don’t take our word for it — grab yourself some pop corn and move on past the break to see it for yourself.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXXXVII: PXP-2000 aspires to little more than playing NES games, a host of video formats

October 6, 2009

If we were tickled by how quickly the PSP Go was hacked, we must say that we’re surprised at how long it took for this bad boy to get KIRFed. And as most shanzai manufacturers do, they packed as many features into this portable as they could: 4.3-inch display (compared to the PSP Go’s 3.8-incher), all kinds of retro gaming support (including NES/Famicom, Gameboy / Gameboy Color, SNES, SFC), a camera of some sort, FM radio, microSD card slot (the device’s only form of storage), TV out, and generous video codes: RM, RMVB, AVI, WMV, ASF, MPG, MPEG, MPE, MP4, DAT, and MOV. Not exactly “aspirational” at $84, but we’ll take it nonetheless.

SciPhone smells success with Android-powered clones, orders up an army

October 5, 2009

You know that N12 we were thrilling about back in June? After faking Android with the Dream G2+ as a skin over its regular OS, SciPhone decided to put real Android on the N12 much to our surprise. Now in the works are the N16 (a phone that looks so much like the Magic that SciPhone just stole the real Magic’s press shot instead), the LG-styled N17, and a Storm-esque N19 (pictured). At least the N12 and N16 have 624MHz Marvell processors and 3G, while the N19 sounds to be a non-3G phone running a mere 400MHz chip and 128MB or RAM. The N12 is due this month wherever clones are sold, no word on when the rest will follow.

Toshiba’s 1.8-inch 160GB PATA disk is ready for KIRFers

September 10, 2009

Wonder what’s inside the latest iPod classic besides suave marketing and Pixi-dust? In a not-so coincidental announcement following yesterday’s classic capacity bump, Toshiba unleashed specs on its newest 160GB 1.8-inch single-platter spinner that just happens to come in 120GB versions too. The Parallel ATA interface holds-tight the 5-mm / 48-gram disk spinning at 4,200 RPM. Interestingly enough, Tosh claims that its hard disk holds 45,000 digital photos, 42,000 songs, or 130 videos thereby besting Apple’s claims on all counts. So get to it KIRFers, the MKxx34GAL series is shipping now and your marketing bullets have already been written.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXXXIV: JXD1000 PSP clone has no UMD drive, shame

Keepin' it real fake, part CCXXXIV: JXD1000 PSP clone has no UMD drive, shame

Sony may or may not have given up on the UMD format, but it’s safe to say that KIRFsters never really got on board in the first place. There’s a long and storied line of PSP knockoffs, and none have had room for little spinny discs. This latest one doesn’t either, but it will play 720p video in a slew of formats, serve up game ROMs in a variety of flavors, tune in FM radio, and take two megapixel pictures. It sports a 4.3-inch, 480 x 272 screen, which won’t do much justice to those 720p vids, but with only 8GB of storage there’s not much room for high-def content anyway. Just $88 gets you one, but if you order 15 you can save a whole buck!

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXXXIII: MacBook Air loses two inches, adds a Windows key

August 26, 2009

If we’ve learned one thing ’round here, it’s that the KIRFsters love taking on Apple. And you know, at first glance this KIRFacious take on the MacBook Air doesn’t seem half bad. Of course, check it out in profile and it looks a lot more like your average netbook than it does Cupertino’s ultraportable — but at least the shanzai manufacturer in question as thrown in a few things that were neglected in the original, including: two USB ports, a removable battery, and a PCIe slot for a 3G module. That said, they also went with an 11.1-inch display (as opposed to the Air’s 13-incher), which could be a good thing or not, depending on your POV. Of course, with a 1.6GH Atom processor and 1GB RAM, this thing isn’t exactly a workhorse, though it’s safe to assume that the price point will fall far below that of the “real deal.” But don’t take our word for it — check out a couple more views of the thing after the break.
