Tesla Roadster to bid adieu in 2011, successor coming in 2013
January 30, 2010
Much like the replicants of Philip K Dick’s fertile imagination, it seems like Tesla’s Roadster will live a famous, but short life. In its pre-IPO filings to the SEC, the company has cited “tooling changes at a supplier” as the reason it will stop selling its current gen Roadster and Roadster Sport EVs after 2011. Given that all Roadsters are built at the Lotus factory in England, this probably suggests new Elise or Exige models are on the way and the manufacturing facilities are being updated accordingly. It also means Tesla will be left without any product to sell until the planned 2012 launch of the Model S sedan, while its next generation of two-door sporty supercars won’t be arriving until 2013. Sigh.

New York gets its first solar EV charging station, you can’t use it
December 16, 2009
What do you do when you’ve got two disused shipping crates, some photovoltaics, and a couple buckets of toxic green paint? Why, you make a solar electric vehicle charging station, the first in New York as it happens. It was created by Beautiful Earth Group, which whipped up this self-contained charging station to juice the company’s car, a similarly painted BMW Mini E that just so happens to fit nicely inside — so long as you don’t want to open the doors too wide. About three hours charges the little sucker up for its maximum range of 100 miles, which ought to be just enough to get you out to the Hamptons. Not that you’d want to go there this time of year.

Some Geek Squads to start driving plug-in Mitsubishi i-MiEVs
December 4, 2009
With the amount of use Chuck gets out of his “Nerd Herd” mobile, plus our own anecdotal sightings of Geek Squad vehicles around town (see what we did there? Science), we’d say that they’re ripe for EV replacements, and what better than the hard-to-pronounce i-MiEV from Mitsubishi to do the job? As announced at the LA Auto Show on Thursday, a few Best Buy Geek Squad locations in California are getting access to the cars in January, with minimal fleets that will expand to the other stores over a few years. For now it’s going to be an experiment, and primarily urban, but we like where this is headed. As in, “not to our house, because we’re perfectly adept at setting up a wireless network, thanks.”

Honda’s timeless Super Cub motorcycle showcased with a touch of EV
October 21, 2009
The world’s best-selling motorcycle of all time (60 million as of May 2008) is dipping its gears into the EV industry. Honda unveiled this week at the Tokyo Auto Show an electric version of its Super Cub motorcycle. Seeing as the gas-based equivalent can already get over 300 miles per gallon, we wonder just how more efficient this new concept could be. Honda reps told Wired it’s a concept designed “to be just as functional and convenient” as its brother bike, so if it does reach mass market, we’re holding out hope it also maintains that low price point.

IBM kicks off Battery 500 Project to boost EV range, 500 miles or bust
October 2, 2009
Electric cars certainly can look nice and promise big things, but the ones we can actually buy today rarely top 50 miles of range. Those promised for the next few years probably won’t break 100, and they’re not going to find wide success until things get a lot better in that department. That’s the initiative of IBM’s Battery 500 Project, bringing together a number of the brightest minds in anode/cathode tech to boost battery storage density by a factor of 10. The focus is on lithium-air technology, which uses nanoscale semiconductors and an open design relying on the air around us for collecting positive ions. About 40 brains are involved in the project at this point, and we think their work is of vital importance. So, if you would, please stop posting funny things on the internet until they’ve come up with a solution. We’d like them to be able to focus completely without any LOLcat distractions.

Video: Mantys golf caddy wants to electrify your game
September 22, 2009
Hmm, an electric vehicle for upright bipeds that is steered by shifting one’s weight … that sure reminds us of something. Where this little putt-putter differs is in having four wheels, which tends to be a comfortingly large number for the sort of folk who can’t be bothered to (or just plain can’t) walk when golfing. And this is definitely targeted at golfers, with the official announcement set for the Golf Europe fair in Berlin this Sunday. The machine comes with turf-saving tires (whatever those are), 18 kilometers per hour top speed, a range of 36 holes, and holders for scorecards, cups, balls and tees. You’ll find another product shot after the break, along with a delightfully cheesy promo video.

Volkswagen L1 concept is crazy efficient, could ship in 2013
September 18, 2009
Look, it’s a well-known fact that the world is ending in either 2012 or when the Large Hadron Collider starts back up (whichever comes first). But, assuming neither of those scenarios actually cause planet Earth to fold in on itself, you should have some pretty swank Volkswagens to choose from in 2013. Just days after hearing that the highly-anticipated E-Up! concept would be landing in around four years, VW is now proclaiming that the L1 concept you see above could also hit production at the same time. What’s odd, however, is that the automaker is already calling this the “most fuel-efficient automobile in the world,” but at 170MPG, you’d think the suits at Chevy would have a thing or two to say about it. At least in theory, the hybrid TDI vehicle can cruise 100 kilometers on just 1.38 liters of diesel, but we’ll wait until the EPA gets a go before buying in completely.

Lexus LF-Ch concept wants to bring Prius hybrid utility to sporty hatchbacks
September 11, 2009
Feast your eyeballs on this little beauty. Lexus, Toyota’s luxury arm, has stopped teasing and gone fully official with the LF-Ch concept you see before you, which is being billed as a “BMW 1 series, but hybrid.” All we know so far is that it’ll run on some version of the Hybrid Synergy Drive found in the Prius, with the concordant ability to be run exclusively in EV mode. Well okay, we also know that it’s damn gorgeous and heading toward production next year, but the all-important price point remains a mystery. Look for the prototype to make its first appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show coming up later this month.

T3 Motion goes third wheelin’ with its CT3 personal commuter EV
July 2, 2009
Don’t get too excited, the above picture’s only a render, but T3 Motion — the company that brought you the security-focused electric stand-up vehicle — is planning to bring this whip to life as the CT3 personal commuter / EV. As Autoblog points out, the lack of a fourth wheel should help this get classified as a motorcycle, meaning it won’t be relegated to zipping around the neighborhood but still will be kept to a 45MPH top speed. However, a 80MPH CT-S version is in the works and will be entered into the Auto X Prize that’ll get an envious 100 miles per gallon. Hit up the read link for the full presser.
