Android 2.1’s boot animation for the Nexus One reminds us of… something
December 14, 2009

Red, green, blue, yellow. They aren’t just four of the bestest shades in Roy G. Biv — to anyone with a computer and a soul, that particular color combo is permanently etched in the brain as the unchanging constituents of the Windows logo in its many, many forms over the years; Google’s logo happens to use them, true, but so far, Android’s been green to the bone. Anyhow, you may have already noticed that some of the shots of the Nexus One clearly show a boot screen with a cross pattern colored thusly, and it turns out there’s an Android 2.1 dump floating around that’s got the animation on board. Of course, dumped ROMs have a tendency to get pulled apart like a turkey at Thanksgiving dinner in a matter of mere hours, and the animation’s already found its way onto YouTube. Just because it’s in a hacked Flan ROM doesn’t mean you should expect to see it on every Android phone under the sun next year — the animation portrays a nexus, of sorts, which would fit in nicely with a phone of the same name.
Seriously though, check out the wait cursor in Windows Mobile 6.5 for comparison after the break (along with a video of the Nexus One’s lovely boot sequence in action).

TomTom feels jolly, temporarily drops price of iPhone GPS app
December 14, 2009
TomTom has done a respectable job of keeping its iPhone GPS app up to date when compared to formidable options from Navigon and the like, but today it’s making its biggest move yet by way of a significant price drop. We’ve heard directly from the company (and confirmed with our own two peepers) that the US and Canada version of the app is now on sale for $69.99, while a US-only version is currently on sale for just $49.99. If you’ll recall, the former was just selling for $99.99 a few days ago, so if you’re planning on making that fateful trip to grandmother’s house again this year, you might want a robotic gal leading the way. Just sayin’. [Warning: Source link directs to iTunes]

Nokia Messaging for social networks hits beta, brings Twitter, and leaves out the N900
December 14, 2009
See, this is what we were saying. It’s not that we’re not excited about Maemo, or that we hate S60, or even that we dislike it when a company like Nokia builds a free messaging app that integrates social networks like Facebook (and now Twitter) into the handset experience. It’s just that Nokia has just built an app that only works on the N97, N97 Mini and the 5800, leaving the company’s quasi-flagship handset the N900 out in the cold. The new app can upload pictures and videos, integrates with email and the dialer, and pushes Facebook and Twitter updates live to the homescreen. It also serves as a all-too-timely example of how hard it is to support two operating systems at once. Alright, we’re done preaching, time to fire up the N97 and tell some people about our day. A video demo is after the break.

Motorola Zeppelin outed as the XT800 for China Telecom — US getting it, too?
December 14, 2009

Even though Motorola’s only officially announced a small handful of devices that run Android so far, this much is clear — the company was dead serious about going all-in on the platform because we’re seeing new leaked hardware practically every time we look. This time around, it’s a clearer view of the Zeppelin, which turns out to be coming to market on China Telecom as the XT800. It looks like it could be a sharp-looking handset, borrowing design elements of the Instinct HD and featuring both GSM and CDMA radios for compliance with Telecom’s up-and-coming 3G network. What makes this juicier, though, is the fact that QQ.com alternately identifies the Zeppelin as the Titanium, a device we’d just seen in the FCC with EV-DO Rev. A last week. That leads us to believe we could see this bad boy on Sprint or Verizon in the near future — and with an HDMI output in this thing, 2010 is shaping up to be a great year for high-end Android gear.
[Thanks, Vitala]

TeliaSonera launches world’s first LTE network, awaits phones eagerly
December 14, 2009
TeliaSonera has today flicked on the green light for its LTE networks in Stockholm and Oslo, officially starting the countdown for LTE-enabled phones. For the moment, keen mobile webstronauts will only be able to hook up their laptop or other USB-equipped device via the Samsung-provided 4G modem, but 100Mbps download speeds on the world’s first commercial LTE network are still nothing to sniff at. This rollout is in fact slightly ahead of schedule, and the other major cities in Sweden and Norway are likely to soon get treated similarly well, while TeliaSonera makes a point to mention it has a license to do similar damage to Finland’s 3G operators. The US might not be too far behind, either, given that the modem in use in Scandinavia recently cleared the FCC. Now if only we had phones that could ride these massive waves we’d be all set.

Exclusive: first Google Phone / Nexus One photos, Android 2.1 on-board
December 14, 2009
Well here you have it folks, honest-to-goodness pics of the Google Phone… AKA, the Nexus One. As you can see by the photos, the design of the device is largely similar to those we’ve seen, but the graphic on back is slightly different, and that piece of tape is covering a QR code (how very Google of them). Just like we’ve heard before, the updated OS features new 3D elements to the app tray, as well as an extended amount of homescreens, though it looks like the lock screen / mute is the same as in Android 2.0.1. Additionally, there’s now a new grid icon at the bottom of the homescreen, which when pressed brings up a webOS card-style preview of all homescreen pages — which raises some interesting possibilities. Apparently there’s been a new software update for the device pushed tonight, and sure enough the phone is identified as the Nexus One on the system info page. Quite clearly this device is running on T-Mobile, and is also using WiFi, so there’s two other questions you’ve got answers to. The phone also appears to come loaded up with Google Navigation (a bit of a no-brainer) and the brand-spanking-new Google Goggles. Hardware wise, the Nexus does look incredibly thin and sleek, and while there’s not a slew of buttons (those four up front are clearly touch sensitive), there is a dedicated volume rocker along the side. Oh, and note this… no HTC logo anywhere to be found. We’ll update the post as / if we get more info, but for now, feast your eyes on the gallery below!
Update: One item of interest. In the packaging there’s a quick start guide which points users to a “questions” page at google.com/phone/support. The page is a dead end right now, but it certainly gets an eyebrow raise from us. If there is a real Google Phone in the offing, that seems a likely landing page for support.
[Thanks, RD]

Apple wins copyright infringement case against Psystar in California
November 14, 2009
Well, well. Apple’s won its copyright infringement claim against Psystar in California. Anyone surprised? As we’ve been saying all along, the key argument wasn’t the OS X EULA or Psystar’s failed monopoly claims, but pure, simple copyright infringement, since Psystar was illegally copying, modifying, and distributing Apple’s code. Psystar was also dinged for circumventing Apple’s kernel encryption in violation of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, but that’s just another nail in the coffin, really. There’s still some legal fireworks to come, as Apple’s various other claims like breach of contract, trademark infringement, and unfair competition weren’t addressed in this ruling, but those are all secondary issues now — and we’d expect this decision to have quite an impact on the other case currently ongoing in Florida. We’ve broken down the highlights after the break, hit up the read link for the PDF and follow along.

How would you change Garmin-Asus’ nuvifone G60?
November 14, 2009

The nüvifone G60 took nearly two years to go from introduction to on sale at AT&T, and just weeks after its introduction, it has been nearly completely forgotten. Smartphones like Motorola’s Droid and HTC’s Droid Eris have already snagged the spotlight, and of course, that $300 (on contract) price tag that it debuted with didn’t help attract any eyes, either. That said, we’re sure at least a few (couple?) of you bit the bullet post-price drop, and now we’re overly anxious to hear how you feel about it. After two years, does this thing really live up to the expectations? Are you satisfied with the navigation capabilities? Is the lackluster battery life worrying you yet? Should Garmin-Asus even bother with a second-gen device? Sound off in comments below!

Sony’s 250GB Uncharted 2 PlayStation 3 Slim bundle on sale in Spain
October 14, 2009

See that there? That’s a whole gaggle of 250GB Uncharted 2 PlayStation 3 Slim bundles ready and waiting for owners in a Spanish retailer. Of course, SCEA won’t mention if this thing is ever coming to US soil, but hey, that’s what importers are there for. Anyone managed to pick one up yet? Let us know in comments!

Acer fulfills prophecy, overtakes Dell as number two PC maker worldwide (update)
October 14, 2009
As if on cue, here’s some new data research firm Gartner lending credence to Lanci’s boasting. Looks like Acer has leapfrogged over Dell for the number two spot in global market share for the third quarter of 2009, from 12.5 to 15.4 percent of the Big Pie Chart[TM]. Meanwhile Dell is just below at 12.8 percent, and HP is sitting happily atop with a 19.9 percent ownership.
Update: Let us adjust our glasses a bit. According to the charts, Acer is number two in worldwide PC sales, not in US as this previously reported. Stateside, the company is sitting at number three at 13.9 percent, behind HP (25.7 percent) and Dell (26.2 percent). Apologies for the confusion, the person responsible for eyesight has been subsequently sacked, the person responsible for the sacking has been sacked, etc.

Samsung rolls out Amazon, Blockbuster video store access across HDTVs, HTIBs and Blu-ray players everywhere
October 14, 2009

Just as promised, the (still SD only) Blockbuster OnDemand service is now available on a slew of Samsung hardware via firmware update, while the Internet@TV lineup (LCD and Plasma HDTVs Series 650 and above and LED HDTVs Series 7000) has a brand new toy with the Amazon VOD Yahoo! widget (which does support HD.) Both services offer a slew of rental and/or purchase options for the digital delivery fanatic, though we still hunger for the audio and quality of VUDU plus the all you can eat goodness of Netflix Watch Instantly, of the millions of TVs out there, there’s surely someone willing to sift through those menus for the ease of viewing Ghosts of Girlfriends Past without resorting to cable VOD — or getting up from the couch. The “convenience” goes both ways, since they’ll also be able to pick up compatible Samsung blu-ray players at Blockbuster stores, right next to the TiVo section — check for exact model #s supported in the PR after the break.

Motorola Droid (alias Sholes) finally gets a decent headshot
October 14, 2009
At last eluding the omnipresent Mr. Blurrycam, Motorola’s Android-powered Sholes handset has finally gotten the sort of photography it deserves, apparently with an official go-to-market name of Droid — or at least one decent photo of it. This pic, which doesn’t really confirm or deny any of our suspicions about the device (Verizon was already in the bag), made a berth on the locked Twitter profile of Boy Genius, and hopefully there’s more where this came from: we’re getting tired of the tease.

Peek offers disgruntled Sidekick owners a free Pronto, internet high-five
October 14, 2009
As Microsoft and Apple have so precisely demonstrated, there’s nothing like a face full of egg to make the competition fire up the sucker punch machine. Take Peek, for example, who is now offering angered Sidekick users (you know, the ones that probably lost all of their data recently) a gratis Pronto for their trouble. All that’s required is an image of you, a frowny face, your wiped Sidekick and a T-Mobile bill — once that’s sent over to Peek’s dedicated inbox, you’ll soon receive your Pronto in the mail. ‘Course, it’s up to you to foot the $20 monthly bill for keeping the thing active, but hey, free’s free. Kind of.

Purported Motorola roadmap uncovers Sholes Tablet, Motus and other mythical mysteries
October 14, 2009
Okay folks, this is the moment where hauling a spoonful of NaCl down the chute would be highly recommended. DialAPhone seems to have unearthed what looks like a Q4 2009 – Q1 2010 Motorola roadmap, and while the finds are certainly intriguing, we’re still hesitant to believe this thing is legit. For starters, this is obviously a European plan, so what we’re viewing here may never make the tedious journey across the pond anyway. Secondly, how many of you honestly believe Moto’s cooking up a Sholes Tablet? Exactly. That said, we’d be the first to drool should that device (or the Motus and / or Zeppelin) launch early next year, and you can bet your bottom dollar that we’ll be scraping the floor for details when CES kicks off in just a few months.
[Thanks, dejan]

Acer: we’ll overtake Dell as world’s number two PC maker… soon
October 14, 2009
Acer’s President Gianfranco Lanci is talking some big talk these days, but not completely without reason. The Taiwan-based computer manufacturer says it does not expect to see a decline in revenue this year over last, meaning that it should clear somewhere in the realm of $17 billion — its 2008 revenue figure. Much of the good news (and sales) hails from Asia, where retail markets have not been as hard hit by the economic insanity of the last year. Moreover, Lanci also said that with these figures, Acer “can finally pass Dell” sometime between this quarter and the next. He also added that the company expects to “breach the gap with HP” when it comes to notebooks, netbooks, and smartphones. So… that means we can expect a ton of Acers this year, right? Right.
