VeriFone Payware Mobile iPhone peripheral looking ready to square off with, er, Square

Sure, it’s not quite as elegant as a little cube jutting out of one corner of the iPhone à la Square, but it looks like the Payware Mobile could certainly double as a pretty sturdy case should it drop. More importantly, the backing of VeriFone means this mobile payment peripheral has some pretty important backing and should be able to hit the ground running. That magical date should be January 15th of next year, free on a 2-year Payware Connect contract, and pre-orders are now live on the website for those who want to join in on the phone. Just one word of advice: when you hand the iPhone over for someone to sign as proof of purchase, make sure you’re able to outrun the chap. Just in case.

Dell rechristens the USFF with OptiPlex 780 mini PC

What’s smaller than a small form factor PC? Frankly, a lot. Cells, shrimp, quarters — you name it. That said, there aren’t many bona fide PCs out there that can shrink down beyond the admittedly vague SSF dimensions, but Dell’s making another push for its Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF) as the “world’s smallest fully functional commercial desktop PC with an integrated power supply and Intel vPro technology.” Of course, there’s quite a bit of qualification going on there (and rightfully so, given just how tiny the fit-PC2i is), but those interested in taking the plunge can order one with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, Windows 7 and a host of other run-of-the-mill amenities starting at $629.

Motorola Milestone’s ad campaign less likely to leave you in a bloody heap than Droid’s

Motorola’s European version of the Droid — the Milestone — is on the verge of release in the UK, so it’s not surprising to see ads starting to pop up. This is the first we’ve seen, and we’ll say that the approach is… interesting. In contrast to the over the top, explosive (literally — did you see that banana?!) Verizon Droid ads, the Milestone ad is all about information, delivered in a soothing, sophisticated tone. “Intelligence and versatility converge” here, and we have to say we much prefer this approach over the it’s a “frickin’ robot” one taken by Verizon. Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch review

We’ve spent some time on Wacom’s first-ever hybrid tablet — the Bamboo Pen & Touch which, surprise, surprise, features independent stylus and multitouch finger inputs. Multitouch-equipped computer users may not be as stoked, but let’s not forget those aspiring artists who are stuck with an old-school trackpad or a desktop sans touchscreen. Compared to previous pen-only models the $99 Pen & Touch should make life easier for tablet newbies, especially by eliminating the hassle of constantly switching between the stylus and the mouse. No, really: using the stylus as a mouse is just plain torture as the tablet’s drawing area is mapped with the screen, which equates to extra hard work when you try to point your stylus at tiny buttons (you can switch to “Mouse mode” in preferences, but that’s still extra donkey work). Dell Adamo XPS: Exclusive to John Lewis in the UK for the holiday season

If you’re lucky enough to live in the US, buying the super slim Adamo XPS is just a matter of hitting up Dell’s website — and then ponying up nearly $2,000, of course. Those in the UK, however, have been sorely out of luck. Luckily for them, we’re hearing that the much lusted-after laptop will be available at John Lewis department stores in time for holiday shopping. That’s right, this hinged baby — which boasts a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo SU9400 processor, a 128GB SSD, a 13.4-inch WLED panel, a 2 megapixel camera, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and GS45 integrated graphics — will be available there as of today, for the base price of £1750 (that’s about $2,800). Epson says EH-TW450 is ‘ultimate gaming projector,’ straps PS3 on nerd in jumpsuit to prove it (video)

Nothing says “extreme” quite like wrist-guards… and knee pads… and elbow pads… and a PS3 Slim backpack. Epson combined all that and more to create its vision of an “extreme gamer,” a Ghostbusters cast-off with a gaming console on his back and an EH-TW450 projector on his chest used to splay Need for Speed: Shift on the walls of buildings, the ceilings of clubs, and the interiors of wind-tunnels. It’s exciting stuff, shown in the video below. Why this projector out of all the company offers? We’re not entirely sure. It’s a 3LCD 720p model with a 3000:1 contrast ratio and a single one watt speaker that probably couldn’t overcome the din of all the road traffic this extremophile was dodging. If you want in on this kind of action expect to pay about $1,000 — for the projector. You’re on your own for the rest of the kit. Loss of self-respect? That comes for free.

Electrolux "Silence Amplified" vacuum with iPod dock and speakers probably sucks

Crazy huh? Sure, but if your company just launched a commercial vacuum cleaner so quiet that it’s called the “UltraSilencer” then what better way to drive that point home than by adding an “iPod dock” (though that’s no iPod we’ve ever seen) and speakers to the damn thing? In fact, Electrolux has taken this Silence Amplified concept so far that they’ve conducted a lab study to prove that “music assisted vacuuming increases the number of nozzle sweeps, improves the cleaning result and leaves a general feeling of happiness.” Duh. ASUS Eee Pad coming soon?

ASUS is said to be quietly working on the launch of a new pad device, between four and seven inches in diagonal breadth, which should offer a combination of MID and tablet PC capabilities. That’s the short, sweet and uncorroborated whole of what we know so far, though we might reasonably expect to see some variant of the Eee PC Touch UI making an appearance. First Droid Eris update makes the slow OTA rollout starting tonight

Sorry, no Android 2.0 here (yet), but Verizon’s version of the HTC Hero is now getting its first over-the-air update. Known by its affection title of Droid Eris ROM:1.16.605.1, the patch is more or less the usual minor tweaks and improvements, although those who like to dramatically hang up on someone should be advised that the phone goes into screensaver while on call, and two presses of the End key will be required to exit the mode and then conclude said conversation. The week-long rollout starts at midnight ET tonight, but as usual, it could take up to a week to hit your system. Full patch notes after the break.

Xbox 360 Wireless N adapter is really real, out this week in US for $100

Microsoft’s releasing a Wireless N Networking Adapter for the Xbox 360? Get out of town! … Oh, wait, we’ve seen it. Constantly. For the last two months. Ah well, let’s just all be happy to see it finally appear on US store shelves, putting an end to this sordid saga and supporting 802.11a/b/g/n for a copper Lincoln under $100. As Joystiq reports, the old 802.11b/g model is slowly being shown the curb, with the current stock being discounted at $80 while supplies last.

Palm Pixi seen running webOS 1.3.1 on video

We’ve already seen a quick Palm Pixi unboxing and hands-on video, but we’re guessing most folks are looking for a bit more than that in the lead-up to launch day. Thankfully, YouTube user stayfly2407 has come through with a video that, for the first time, clearly shows the Pixi running webOS 1.3.1, which may or may not be the version the phone actually ships with — it was only just recently seeded to developers. The video unfortunately doesn’t show any new features associated with this version, however, but it does seem to be speedy enough even in spite of the Pixi’s slower processor. HP Envy 15 unboxing and hands-on

After our mixed feelings on the HP Envy 13, we were excited but also a little bit scared to see the 13’s big brother, the Envy 15. It’s running a Core i7 processor clocked at 1.6GHz, and has 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 discrete graphics fronted by a 1920 x 1080 15.6-inch display despite the fact that it doesn’t have a built-in disc drive. Luckily there’s an external Blu-ray packed into the box (that’s a $225 option on top of the $1,800 base price), but most games and apps these days are available via download anyway, so it’s not that big of knock on your power-user cred. The unboxing experience is actually identical to that of the Envy 13 (quite elegant), and we were happy to see that when we fired up the laptop the trackpad seemed better configured than that of the pre-update Envy 13 we reviewed. We were less enthused to see that the IE comes pre-installed with HP and Norton toolbars — pretty janky for a premium machine — but luckily we rarely have to see the ugly sight of IE more than once on a new machine. For the most part this is just an Envy 13 bigged up, and that’s nothing to complain about.

Dual Electronics announces XGPS300 navigation cradle for iPod touch

Well, it looks like iPod touch users pondering the somewhat pricey (and still unfulfilled) proposition offered by TomTom’s Car Kit now finally have another option to consider, as Dual Electronics has announced a navigation cradle of its own that’s aimed solely at Apple’s GPS-less handheld. While it’s not quite as sleek as TomTom’s unit, Dual’s new XGPS300 rig does boast a few decided advantages, including a cradle that also doubles as a rechargeable battery for some added juice when you’re out and about and, most importantly, a free NavAtlas navigation app, which will apparently only work with Dual’s cradle (sorry, no mix-and-matching here). You’ll also get a built-in speaker, a mini USB port for charging and, of course, an adjustable windshield mount for in-car use. Still no firm word on a release date just yet, but it looks like this one should be available sometime this month for $179.99. Head on past the break for a video.

NVIDIA tablet mystery solved: an ODM Tegra prototype

NVIDIA just hit us with more info on that mysterious tablet Jen-Hsun Huang was pictured with yesterday, and the truth is just as we’d assumed: it’s a Tegra prototype from an ODM called ICD that’s being “actively” shopped to carriers around the world. Sorry, folks, no Apple involvement here — although we’re sure Jen-Hsun would enthusiastically embrace that possibility.

As far as the ICD tablet goes, we’re waiting for official confirmation on specs, but we got a credible tip this morning suggesting that it’s currently running Windows CE with a resistive touchscreen, and that both Android and capacitive upgrades are in the cards, as well as multiple screen sizes. We’re also told that the goal is a March 2010 launch and that T-Mobile might be involved, but we wouldn’t take any of that to the bank until we hear for real — stay tuned.
